Rather than camping out in the damp and the cold to wait til my local record store opens its doors so I can swan around looking for that Duran Duran/Hawkwind split 7” on ltd. RED vinyl*, I’m going to write about some record store experiences.

1. The Cribs - Men’s Needs 7” (HMV Sheffield, April 2007)

I didn’t really know who the Cribs were. My friend Rob asked me if I wanted to see them the weekend before because they were doing a show in HMV. It was at 6 and I had to skive school by faking a dentist appointment (I was pretty thorough; printed letter, signed, dated, envelope). I dashed out of school, ditched my uniform and got on the train. There were about 60 people there and it was a bit weird watching such a band in a chain record shop. I was really taken with them and pretended to sing along with all the songs that I didn’t know. After the show I felt the need to buy something from them, and the novelty of buying my first 7” was staring me right in the face. I went over to the signing table and shook hands with them and told them it was a great gig. They signed my record. Exactly six years later, I’m playing with them at the 100 Club. Rad.

2. Fuckshovel - Long Time Dead 7” (Jack’s Records, 2009)

This was the first year of Tramlines and the last trading weekend of Jacks Records. For me Jacks Records was that place you went in for the sole purpose of buying gig tickets. And more often than not you were met with some grumpy guy flipping through the remaining tickets for, oof, I don’t know, The Wombats? It never struck me that people went in there to buy records and so, on the last day of trading I went in a bought two picture discs, because I didn’t know what I was doing. One of them was Dani California (I’m sorry) and the other was Fuckshovel’s Long Time Dead, which had Princess Diana on one side and George Bush on the other. I didn’t know what it was going to sound like, I just thought it looked cool and I felt sorry for the guys in the record shop. Ok?

3. Los Campesinos - Romance is Boring 7”, (Rough Trade West, July 2010)

Shortly after my Fuckshovel incident, I made a concentrated effort to build my record collection. This began in earnest with a trip to Rough Trade West. I walked around Notting Hill for ages and ended up asking a man if he knew where it was and, sure as luck, he did and was on his way over just that moment. I don’t think we walked there together. I think I legged it there because I had to be the other side of London pretty quick. I stepped in and sweated and looked at everything. There was too much and all the records were packed very tightly into the crates. I didn’t know where to start. More sweating. And then before I knew it I had Fugazi’s Furniture and LC!’s RiB. The latter gets a special mention for the outstanding b-side Too Many Flesh Suppers.

4. The Clash - Remote Control (Monster Melodies, August 2009)

Seems like 09 was a fruitful year for vinyl scavenging. I had a spare afternoon in Paris and rather than wait in the queues at the Louvre, I looked up the nearest record shop. It was called Monster Melodies and it had its own “Franck Sinatra” [sic] area. It was all secondhand and pretty pricey. As I walked in they started playing Exile on Main St and I spent the duration of the Stones’ 10th full length rolling around the store, looking for something worthwhile. In the end I decided on The Clash’s Remote Control 7”. It cost me 17€ which I thought was a total bargain, until I got home and my science teacher told me that it wasn’t a proper Clash single because CBS hadn’t told them and both tracks were on the album in one form or another. On the plus side she lent me “Sniffin’ Glue - The Bible” which contains a load of old SG articles.

5. Jesus Lizard/Nirvana split 7” (Some really fucking dodgy place in Berlin, man, 2012)

I knew about this record, but had no idea what the sleeve looked like. Me and R were walking around Berlin and going into every record shop we could find. Berlin has a load of great record shops that are open pretty late into the evening. This one wasn’t one of the great ones. We had a quick look round. There was no one in the shop. As we were about to leave I saw it sat on top of a bunch of other records. It had a sticker on it that said 45€. I didn’t have the money but I shouted out to see if anyone would turn up. Then the Old Indian on the front cover of the 7” came in through the front door of the shop and asked me for 35€. I told him it was too much and as we left he said 25€. We were walking down the road and I had a bit of cash left over. I borrowed a few euros from Rory and about 10 minutes later we went back in. The Old Indian asked for 15€ and as I handed over two 5€ notes, he handed me the record. We left and went and sat on the bank of the Spree and drank Erdinger.

*Good luck finding this. I queued up in the snot, wind and rain to get the only remaining copy from Rare and Racy last year.
